Severe coastal flooding has inundated parts of New York and New Jersey as a powerful storm system moves through the Mid-Atlantic. Residents in the Howard Beach area of Queens used kayaks to reach local train stations as the National Weather Service reported rainfall of up to 6 inches and wind gusts reaching 60 mph. The storm surge has rendered several roads in New Jersey impassable and triggered widespread disruption across the coast.

State leaders in the affected regions declared emergencies after the system grounded hundreds of flights and cut electricity to thousands of homes and businesses. A strong early season storm continues to batter the coast, including Surf City, New Jersey, and severe weather warnings remain in effect for more than 60 million people through the weekend.
