1 Fed's John Williams Rejects October Hike After Record Market Bet↩︎ 🏦 US Markets Sep 28, 7:14 AM EDT 35/18
The New York Fed president stated that the central bank's current policy doesn't require immediate tightening despite investors pricing in a high probability of another rate increase next month. John Williams, the vice chair of the FOMC, told listeners on Tuesday that there is "no need for urgency" for an October hike following the Fed's action in September, explicitly pushing back against market futures that had reached a record 70% probability of a rate increase in October.
Williams forecast that one further upward adjustment of the federal funds target range may be appropriate late this year if economic momentum remains consistent with his expectations. The Fed is now awaiting a series of reports to guide policy, including the Labor Department's JOLTS job openings data on Tuesday and the September jobs report due this Friday.
