Leighton Brown, a 56 year old New York City Housing Authority employee, was killed by a falling tree at the Cypress Hills Houses in Brooklyn during a violent autumn storm. A second person was struck by a falling tree in the Kelly Park playground in Brooklyn, though their condition and age remain unknown. The storm has caused widespread disruption across the Northeast, leaving over 100,000 customers without power and forcing the cancellation of more than 400 flights.

States of emergency are in effect for New York and New Jersey as coastal flooding has submerged cars at a hotel in Edgewater and forced residents in Queens to use kayaks to reach train stations. The National Weather Service warned of wind gusts up to 80 mph and 8 inches of rain. New York City Emergency Management officials have stated that the most severe conditions are still expected to arrive.
