1 Trump Demands US Interest Rates 1% or Lower After First Fed Hike Since 2023↩︎ 🏦 US Markets Sep 16, 4:38 PM EDT 139/69
An immediate reduction in national borrowing costs is necessary to reflect the country's credit standing, President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social. He argued that the U.S. is the "best credit in the world" and should have the lowest rates globally, while claiming the nation would make at least $1.5 trillion a year if it stopped trading with every country with which it maintains a trade deficit.
The demands followed a unanimous 12-0 vote by the Fed to raise interest rates by 25 basis points to a 3.75% to 4% target range, the first increase since July 2023. Chair Kevin Warsh described monetary policy independence as a "two-way street" during a press conference, and the White House called the rate hike "unfortunate" though it maintained trust in the central bank.
