1 White House Economist Steve Miran Labels Fed Rate Hike Mistake Before Wednesday Vote↩︎ 🏦 US Markets Sep 15, 3:02 PM EDT 30/20
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh faces renewed pressure to hold interest rates after White House economist Steve Miran described a potential increase this week as a "mistake." Miran cited Core CPI data as consistent with a hold during a CNBC appearance, challenging market consensus just before the Wednesday policy announcement. CME FedWatch and Polymarket price a 25 basis point increase with an 87% to 89% probability.
Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan forecast a 25 bp rise, citing stubborn inflation and a jump in Brent crude prices to $107 per barrel. This shift coincides with the 10 year Treasury yield surging above 5% for the first time since 2007. The White House maintains that President Donald Trump respects the independence of the central bank, despite his previous demands that the U.S. should maintain the lowest interest rates globally to reflect its credit strength.
National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett warned that the Fed has raised rates ahead of an election only a few times since 1913, arguing that staying out of the cycle is essential to preserving independence. Warsh, who took over the central bank in May, has focused on managing prices and inflation as markets prepare for the Wednesday decision.
