The US Labor Department revised jobless claims for the week of Sept. 12 to 198,000 as part of its latest economic report on Thursday. Initial applications for unemployment benefits then fell by 1,000 to 197,000 for the week ending Sept. 19, coming in below the forecast range of 200,000 to 201,000. This represents the lowest level of filings since July and brings the total close to 57 year lows.

Continuing claims, which track the number of people remaining on benefits, rose by 2,000 to 1.719M, failing to reach the 1.740M forecast. The four-week average for initial claims currently stands at 202.3k. State-level data showed the largest increases in California, Hawaii, and New York, while Massachusetts, Arkansas, and Kentucky saw the largest decreases in claims.
