The US military will undergo a reduction in its top leadership tiers as the Department of Defense begins a structural overhaul. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth will announce a 20% cut to the number of roles reserved for generals and admirals during his State of the Force address, Fox News reports. The reductions apply to specific leadership slots rather than a direct removal of serving officers, and some positions will be downgraded to the rank of colonel or Navy captain.
This target doubles the 10% reduction ordered last year and is part of a broader shakeup at the Pentagon. The Department of Defense will finalize the removal of these senior officer positions by Jan. 1, 2027.
