Networks Refuse to Replace CNN, Leaving Trump Trip Without TV Pool

ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox News declined to replace CNN after the White House removed it from its scheduled pool assignment, leaving President Donald Trump’s Thursday trip to Texas and Oklahoma without the shared network television crew. The five networks rotate coverage of presidential events and distribute footage to other news organizations.

The White House print pool warned that the absence would make live streams of Trump’s comments harder to obtain and said the administration would stream his events and remarks. The network pool has operated normally on days assigned to networks other than CNN. The same refusal to substitute followed CNN’s exclusion from Trump’s Sept. 26 trip to Tennessee.

The dispute continues despite Judge Timothy Kelly’s Sept. 24 order restoring White House press credentials for CNN, MS NOW and Politico for 14 days on due process grounds. The outlets are seeking an injunction preserving their access beyond the order’s Oct. 8 expiration, and their lawyer, Ted Boutrous, argues that the order also covers pool duties. A new supporting brief filed by the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press was joined by 77 media organizations, up from 49 in the previous brief.
