Rand Paul Blocks John Kennedy AI Kill Switch Bill Requiring Company Shutoffs
▶

A request for the immediate passage of artificial intelligence safety legislation failed Wednesday after Senator Rand Paul objected to the proposal on the Senate floor. Paul blocked Senator John Kennedy's request for unanimous consent, stalling a bill that would mandate a "kill switch" for all AI models. The legislation required firms to maintain their own shutoff mechanisms to prevent systems from acting "like the Terminator," without granting the federal government control over the process.

Paul stated that the government needs more information before dictating rules for the economy and cautioned that acting too quickly could hinder the industry for decades. The bill can still proceed to a full Senate vote, but the House of Representatives leaves tonight and will not return until after the midterm elections.
