Tennessee Governor Denies Clemency for First Female Execution in 200 Years

Christa Pike was convicted of killing a classmate out of jealousy in 1995 when she was 18. Governor Bill Lee recently denied her bid for clemency, which leaves her scheduled execution for this Wednesday in place. If carried out, the event will mark the first time Tennessee has executed a woman in more than 200 years.

The state's executive branch rejected the plea for mercy as the final administrative hurdle before the execution date. Pike's case has drawn attention due to the state's long history of not putting women to death, with no further legal stays currently in effect to stop the proceedings.
