CNN, MS NOW and Politico filed a federal lawsuit in Washington on Monday seeking an order temporarily blocking President Donald Trump’s ban and restoring their White House press credentials. The outlets sued Trump and senior officials, alleging retaliation and viewpoint discrimination under the First Amendment and a denial of due process under the Fifth Amendment. Their lawsuit says the ban came without notice, standards or a hearing. CNN held about 40 permanent press passes and MS NOW about 22, while Politico was a pool member.

ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox News declined to replace CNN after the White House blocked its scheduled Monday assignment, suspending shared television pool coverage of presidential events. The five networks normally rotate crews and distribute footage to other outlets. The suspension leaves Trump’s trip to New York for the UN General Assembly without the usual shared network coverage; the pool chair said no replacement pool would be provided. “No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting,” the five networks said in a joint statement.

Trump announced the ban on Sept. 18, accusing the outlets of reporting “FICTION and LIES” and warning that others could follow. Reporters were denied entry the next day. Vice President JD Vance defended the restrictions Monday as a withdrawal of special access rather than a bar on reporting. “They can still report. They still have the access to free speech. They’re just not going to get an office in the White House anymore,” he said.
