This internal pressure accompanies the agency's announcement of charges against 16 individuals for participating in illegal voting and registration schemes across the United States, including the unlawful casting of ballots by non-citizens in federal elections.

Among those indicted is Analiea Milliscent Eccles, a Venezuelan DACA recipient alleged to have voted nine times between 2008 and 2024. Other charges target Victoria Viktorivna Aquilina, a Russian national who registered to vote in 2023, and Monica Carzoli, a Mexican resident who admitted to voting in November 2024. The investigations also uncovered related offenses, including wire fraud, passport fraud, and unlawful firearm purchases.

The office of the Deputy Attorney General makes the final decision on whether these cases proceed, according to reports of the internal conference call. Some personnel within the department expressed concern that the White House may utilize these prosecutions to cast doubt on upcoming midterm elections.
