FCC Chairman Brendan Carr Rejects Review of Trump's $20M Taxpayer Funded Ads

The agency responsible for regulating US broadcast media has declined to investigate television commercials promoting President Donald Trump. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr told Representative Ted Stewart that the advertisements do not raise "any red flags" and are the type of normal public service announcements that the federal government "naturally and normally runs," meaning the commission would not take up the matter for review.

The Trump administration used $20 million in funds allocated to U.S. Customs and Border Protection to finance the campaign, with the Office of Management and Budget transferring the money on Sept. 19. The ads, which AdImpact estimates have cost at least $2.5 million in airtime to date, are facing legal challenges from the singer JMSN and bipartisan criticism. Senator Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and House Democrats have questioned the legality of using taxpayer money for spots that they argue promote the president's personal image ahead of midterm elections.
