Footage from the Austin Police Department appears to dispute claims by Perez and his legal counsel that ICE agents forcibly pulled him from his vehicle after the shooting occurred. Despite the new evidence, a U.S. federal judge has issued a temporary stay on the deportation of Perez, according to his lawyer.

The ICE officer involved in the shooting was a recent recruit who did not activate his issued body camera during the encounter, according to former DHS officials. Perez, 28, was hospitalised in serious but stable condition with a torso wound before being transferred into federal custody. The incident sparked protests in North Austin, where police used pepper balls to disperse crowds and detained multiple demonstrators.
