1 Hegseth Deploys Pentagon AI to Block Foreign Midterm Meddling 🇺🇸 US Politics Sep 28, 3:50 PM EDT 18/16
Military intelligence agencies and U.S. Cyber Command have begun monitoring overseas threats to voting systems to ensure the integrity of the November elections. A Sept. 22 directive from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth mobilizes the Defense Intelligence Enterprise to identify and disrupt cyberattacks and influence operations using AI tools that exceed the capabilities of those deployed in 2024. These efforts are coordinated with the Department of Homeland Security to counter threats to the midterms before they impact the vote.
The order explicitly prohibits the deployment of military personnel to polling places or the seizure of voting machines. This restriction remains despite President Donald Trump not ruling out putting personnel at the polls, a position that has drawn concern from Democrats. The current operation mirrors a similar framework used during the 2022 midterms under the Biden administration, an initiative described as "fundamental" by Cyber Command nominee Joshua Rudd.
