Hochul Names AG Letitia James Special Prosecutor in Cornell Rape Probe

New York's state government has seized control of the criminal investigation into gang-rape allegations at Cornell University by sidelining the local district attorney. Governor Kathy Hochul signed an executive order appointing Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor, citing a loss of faith in the Tompkins County DA's ability to oversee the proceedings fairly. The probe examines allegations from an accuser known as Jane Doe regarding an assault by seven Chi Phi fraternity members on Oct. 19, 2024.

The intervention follows a September 2026 civil lawsuit and new disclosures of text messages that suggest the accuser's views of the events evolved after the incident. While transcripts show the woman told police with 100% confidence that she was raped, the local DA previously declined criminal charges, describing the defendants as immoral but not clearly criminal. Separately, the university's internal adjudication process has come under fire after reports that a hearing officer surfed the web while driving during a disciplinary trial.
