House Democrats Introduce Resolution to Block Trump Saudi Civil Nuclear Deal

A group of U.S. lawmakers introduced a formal measure on Thursday to prevent a civil nuclear agreement between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia from taking effect. Democratic representatives including Garamendi, Gregory Meeks, Don Beyer, and Brad Sherman filed a resolution of disapproval, stating the deal skips safeguards designed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. The group argued that the current terms risk triggering a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.

A bipartisan group of senators led by Jeff Merkley and Edward Markey separately urged the administration to declassify two binding side letters negotiated alongside the agreement. In a request sent to Senator Marco Rubio and Energy Secretary Wright, the senators asserted that withholding such documents for peaceful nuclear cooperation is without precedent and that the public disclosure of the text is only half complete.
