1 NY Prosecutors Reopen Cornell Gang Rape Probe After Police Files Surface 🇺🇸 US Politics Sep 28, 11:06 AM EDT 68/28
Newly surfaced police records are raising questions about the legal basis for why prosecutors once declined to bring charges in a campus sexual assault probe. The New York state investigation into a 2024 incident at Cornell University's Chi Phi fraternity has been reopened, focusing on allegations that seven men drugged and assaulted a student. Documents detailing the accuser's early statements to police were recently obtained by CNN, ABC News, and WCBS, adding fresh scrutiny to the case.
The probe was revived after a civil lawsuit alleged a 20 year old woman was incapacitated with ketamine and raped for seven hours. While the Tompkins County District Attorney previously argued the victim's original police statements were not explicitly non-consensual, her lawyer contends the reports are similar to the lawsuit. Cornell has faced a boycott from alumni parents and prospective students over its decision to expel only two of the accused, while others were required to write apology essays.
