A legal challenge has returned to the U.S. highest court to determine if a revised set of congressional district lines will be used for the general elections in November. Opponents of Missouri's 2025 redistricting plan have asked for an emergency stay to block a lower court order requiring the state to adopt the updated layout. Justice Samuel Kavanaugh has requested a response to the filing by 2 p.m. ET today.

The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals recently ruled that switching from the 2025 map to the 2022 version after the August primaries violated Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution by depriving voters of their right to select congressional nominees. The 2025 map creates a 7R 1D split, shifting one seat from Democratic to Republican control. While a federal judge has entered a permanent injunction to enforce the new map, it remains administratively stayed until Sept 28 at 5 p.m. CT.
