The administration has spent at least $1.7 million to air three different commercials on Fox News and during NFL broadcasts, including a 'golden age of America' spot. While the White House defends the ads as public service announcements, the campaign has faced bipartisan criticism. Republican Senator Thom Tillis likened the messaging to the style of Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán, and Rep. Thomas Massie compared the use of public funds for presidential promotion to tactics used in 'banana republics.' Federal law prohibits the use of taxpayer dollars for publicity or propaganda.
