The Senate is investigating whether the expenditure violates federal law prohibiting the use of taxpayer money for publicity or propaganda. The Trump administration has rejected allegations of illegality, defending the spots as nonpartisan public service announcements because "patriotism isn’t partisan." Legal analysts and critics have challenged this framing, calling the use of public funds for campaign-style advertisements plainly illegal.
