The White House revealed a new initiative to boost the American manufacturing sector on Monday during an announcement in the Oval Office. President Trump stated that Minnesota-based Mesabi Metallics will invest $15 billion to construct a steel mill in Iowa, which will be the largest steel plant in American history. The facility is designed as a fully American supply chain using iron ore from the Minnesota Iron Range to produce an initial 7.5 million tons of steel per year, with plans to eventually reach 10 million tons. The mill is expected to create approximately 1,750 permanent jobs with production targeted to begin by 2030.

The announcement included officials and executives such as Howard Lutnick, Jarrod Agen, and J Jovanovic. The project is part of a broader effort to counter economic voter dissatisfaction in Iowa, a battleground state, ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. By prioritizing domestic labor over foreign workers, the administration intends to center the domestic steel industry as a key pillar of its economic agenda.
