Trump Welcomes Chinese Auto Plants Despite 100% Tariffs

Bipartisan lawmakers are pushing for a permanent prohibition on the importation of vehicles from China to be fast-tracked by the Senate this week. This legislative effort coincides with remarks from President Donald Trump, who stated he would "welcome" Chinese automakers establishing manufacturing plants in the U.S. during his current meetings with President Xi Jinping.

The possibility of domestic Chinese production contrasts with current trade barriers, including import taxes that exceed 100% and a 2025 regulation that bars Chinese-connected passenger vehicles due to data security concerns. Senator Bernie Moreno is among the authors of the bipartisan bill seeking to codify the ban on these vehicles regardless of the administration's stance on domestic investment.
