The White House removed CNN from its Monday assignment to serve as the television pool representative for the entire White House press corps. The exclusion creates uncertainty about coverage of President Donald Trump's Monday trip to New York, CNN's Brian Stelter reported.

Trump announced Friday that he was banning CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House over their coverage, accusing them of reporting “fake news” and warning that other outlets would follow. Reporters from all three organizations have since been denied access. CNN reporter Betsy Klein was turned away Saturday and her press pass was seized. An MS NOW reporter and photographer were also denied entry that morning, though a producer was allowed in.

Lawyers for the three outlets are working through next steps, Stelter reported Sunday. Bruce D. Brown, president of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, said: “The First Amendment is clear that once the White House invites in some journalists, it can't ban others because it doesn't like their reporting.” UN Ambassador Mike Waltz defended the restrictions Sunday, saying: “The president is absolutely within his rights to limit journalists to government facilities.”
