Federal troops of the Ethiopian National Defense Force have retaken the town of Erebi in the Afar region, forcing the TPLF and allied militias to withdraw toward Tigray. This development signals the unraveling of the primary rebel offensive toward the east, following the army's recent capture of Alamata, a strategic hub that serves as the southern gateway into the Tigray region.

The fighting stems from the collapse of a 2022 peace agreement and the creation of a rebel alliance including the TPLF, Fano, and the Oromo Liberation Army to oust Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. Ethiopia employs a force of 503,000 active troops and 34 combat jets supported by UAE drone technology, though warfare has spread into the Amhara and Afar states. A medic reported that 52 civilians have died in Tigray, and the government has accused Eritrea, Sudan, and Egypt of backing the opposition.
