1 Ethiopian Army Retakes Mekelle Airport to Reverse TPLF Offensive ⚔️ War Oct 1, 4:37 AM EDT 31/20
Allied pro-government militias have seized control of the Alula Aba Nega runway in the city of Mekelle, effectively ending a 10 day occupation by rebel forces. The Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) and other combatants began abandoning the regional capital on Saturday as the Ethiopian military's counteroffensive reversed a rebel push that started in late September. Control of the airfield restores the central government's authority over all humanitarian transit into the region.
The escalation signals the final collapse of the 2022 Pretoria peace deal, which had ended a war that killed 600,000 people. The current conflict has expanded to include the first known drone attacks on Addis Ababa by opposition forces and a total break in diplomatic relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea. The African Union has called for maximum restraint as tensions surge between Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Egypt.
