South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff detected an unidentified projectile launched by North Korea into the East Sea on Sunday. A second launch followed, totaling two projectiles fired within a three hour window, one of which was identified as a ballistic missile. These launches took place off the peninsula's eastern coast into waters also known as the Sea of Japan.

Japan's defense ministry has not confirmed whether the second missile landed inside its exclusive economic zone. The missile activity comes days after Pyongyang reaffirmed its status as a nuclear-armed state and fired a series of short-range ballistic missiles.
