NEWRussian Missile Strikes Idle 3 Final Plants to Wipe Out 90% of Ukraine Steel OutputMT

Zaporizhstal, Kametstal, and the ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih factory have ceased operations after ballistic missiles hit their blast furnaces. Metinvest and ArcelorMittal confirmed the shutdown of these facilities, which removes 90% of Ukraine's steel output. Oleksandr Vodoviz, an executive at Metinvest, stated that the country no longer has a steel industry and that the loss of more than 15,000 jobs will impact tax revenues.

Production shrank from 21 million metric tons pre-war to 7.4 million metric tons in 2025, and August output fell 57% year-on-year. Other economic losses include the destruction of 2.1 million square meters of warehouses and a Black Sea blockade costing 1.5% of GDP. Agriculture exports have declined to 40% of normal volumes, and the steel sector's previous contribution of 7% to GDP has approached zero.
