Saudi air defenses intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca at 6:50 p.m. local time Tuesday before it entered restricted airspace around the holy city, the Saudi-led coalition said. A Houthi official rejected the account, calling the report of a drone heading toward Mecca “a worn-out lie.”

Coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki described the incident as the second Houthi attempt to target Mecca, citing a ballistic missile launch in July 2017, and pledged measures to deter further attacks. The coalition called the security of the Two Holy Mosques a “red line.” Saudi Arabia and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation condemned what they described as a “heinous” attack.

Saudi Civil Defense activated warning systems Tuesday in Jazan, Abha and Khamis Mushait to alert residents to danger. On Monday, Houthi ballistic missile and drone attacks on Khamis Mushait, Abha and Taif injured 13 civilians and damaged seven homes and two vehicles, the coalition said. It described the injuries as minor to moderate.
