President Donald Trump decided Sunday against joining Saudi Arabia in attacks on Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis for now, the New York Times reported, citing administration officials. Commanders had approved targets and troops were loading bombs onto US warplanes when the planned operation was halted.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had urged Trump to intervene, prompting him to reverse an earlier reluctance and order the Pentagon to prepare strikes. By midday Sunday, Trump had changed course again, the Times reported. Much of his inner circle was skeptical or opposed to opening another front while the US military was already strained by the war with Iran.

The Houthis claimed Saturday that they attacked sites in Riyadh and Saudi Aramco facilities in Yanbu with missiles and drones. A fire burned at an Aramco fuel tank near Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, while the Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted a Houthi ballistic missile headed toward the capital. The US State Department warned Americans Saturday to reconsider travel to or through the Middle East, citing the potential for rapid escalation, flight cancellations and airspace closures.
