The Pentagon officially concluded Operation Inherent Resolve on Wednesday, confirming that all coalition troops and equipment have departed Erbil Air Base to end the mission. The military's 12 year campaign against ISIS now transitions to a support role, leaving the Iraqi government and Kurdish Peshmerga as the primary forces responsible for maintaining security and suppressing remaining insurgent cells. Washington will continue to provide partners in the region with targeted intelligence and training support.

The withdrawal closes a combat footprint that began with the 2003 invasion, costing over $1.7 trillion and claiming approximately 4,500 American lives. While the exit was agreed upon in 2024, Iraqi security officials have warned that the vacuum may embolden Iran-backed militias and enable ISIS to regroup. Baghdad has already pushed the deadline for these militias to disarm from September 30 back to June 2027, despite American concerns that the armed groups now serve as a regional launchpad for Tehran.
