The United States and its coalition partners have finished removing all troops from their final bases in Iraq, according to the country's defense ministry. The handover of the primary U.S. forces headquarters at Baghdad Airport officially concluded the withdrawal, which reached its deadline on September 30. Iran-backed militias have described the departure as a "historic victory" and a "crushing defeat for the American project," while Iraqi security officials warn that the vacuum could allow Islamic State sleeper cells to regroup.

The pullout concludes a 23 year military presence that began with the 2003 invasion and resulted in approximately 4,500 American deaths. The exit was negotiated in 2024 under the Biden administration and completed during the Trump administration, while the U.S. remains at war with Iran. Including Iraq and other regional conflicts, Washington's post-9/11 military campaigns have cost an estimated $8 trillion.
