Residents in the Philippines and Malaysia are facing poor air quality as smoke drifts from forest blazes. Singapore also woke up to thick smoke and unhealthy air quality measurements on Sept. 29 as pollutants traveled from across the Indonesian archipelago to blanket the city-state.

The blazes are fueled by a blockbuster El Niño and land-clearing practices that have created tinderbox conditions. The resulting fires are reportedly the size of Western Europe, pushing a toxic haze throughout Southeast Asia as they continue to spread.
