Junts Party Opposes Spanish Ban on Evictions Until 2030

Parliamentary approval for Spain's newest housing regulations is in jeopardy as the Junts party resists the measures in Congress. The decree, which the Council of Ministers approved to address a nationwide housing crisis, includes a ban on forced evictions through 2030 and a prohibition on investment funds purchasing residential property until 2028. Opponents of the plan argue that mandated automatic renewals for tenant contracts and rent curbs will discourage private landlords from offering properties, further limiting supply.

The legislation follows mass protests in Madrid and Barcelona sparked by the eviction of Maricarmen Abascal, an 87-year-old pensioner carried from her home of 70 years on a stretcher. Abascal, whose rent was hiked from €500 to €1,650 despite a €1,350 pension, has since reached a deal with the developers to return to her home without the 275% rent increase. Despite this resolution, protesters continue to camp in central Madrid, including Puerta del Sol, to demand permanent tenant protections.
