Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union party failed to clear the 5% threshold for entry into the regional legislature of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The result marks the first time since 1949 that the mainstream conservative party failed to gain seats in a German state parliament, after posting a share of 4.9% of the vote. The far-right Alternative for Germany took first place in the election, more than doubling its 2021 vote share.

Merz vowed to remain in office and push ahead with an economic reform agenda after describing the regional results as a disaster. In Berlin's state election, the far-left Die Linke party finished first with approximately 25% of the vote. While the AfD continues to grow, other major parties still refuse to enter into coalitions with the far-right under a policy known as the 'firewall,' complicating the formation of a majority government in the northeast.
