The Senate, sitting as an impeachment court, lowered the number of votes needed to secure a guilty verdict, thereby reducing the threshold that prosecutors must clear to remove the country's second-highest official from power.

Allies of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. are also considering the invalidation of specific votes of support for Duterte as her trial continues. If convicted, the impeached vice president would be permanently barred from participating in politics.
