1 France Detains 440 Protesters in Nationwide School Blockades 🌍 World Sep 29, 6:02 AM EDT 24/13
Students across several cities ignited fires and fought with law enforcement to shut down access to campuses on Tuesday. The Interior Minister reported that police detained 440 people during the unrest, which included the burning of rubbish bins and electric bicycles. In the Alpes-Maritimes, police deployed tear gas to disperse crowds, and in Saint-Denis, school staff linked arms to protect pupils from officers during a confrontation.
The demonstrations target teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, and heat-damaged facilities, while specifically opposing planned budget cuts for 2027. These actions coincide with a nationwide strike by public sector workers, including firefighters and educators, as France prepares for a presidential election scheduled for next year.
