1 France's Crisis Cell Combats Riots Blocking 30 Universities 🌍 World Sep 29, 6:02 AM EDT 69/27
The French government suspended public transportation in Marseille and Strasbourg on Thursday after police detained 500 people in a single morning. Authorities designated the nationwide student unrest as "urban violence," triggering the activation of a government crisis cell to manage the disorder. More than 1,000 arrests have been made since Tuesday across at least 350 high schools, and the protests have expanded to block approximately 30 university faculties nationwide.
Students are demanding increased funding to address teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms and dilapidated buildings, such as schools that overheated during recent heatwaves. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu ordered ministers to postpone official trips to prioritize prefectural resources on containment. Violence has escalated to include the torching of buildings, including the Lycée Nelson Mandela in Nantes, and attacks on police with mortar-fired fireworks, resulting in more than 200 injuries to staff and officers.
