French PM Scraps Ministerial Trips to Manage Campus Riots
▶

Sébastien Lecornu has ordered his cabinet members to postpone official travel to prioritize government resources for the containment of widening student blockades. More than 200 schools in the Paris region were disrupted Thursday, and damages in the Ile-de-France area are estimated to exceed €1 million. The movement has expanded to include at least 26 university faculties as students across the country clash with law enforcement and block campus entrances.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported 625 people were detained on Wednesday alone, with over 1,000 total arrests since the nationwide unrest began last week. Protesters are demanding an increase in teachers, smaller class sizes, and updated facilities to address overcrowding and poor temperature control in classrooms. These demonstrations have aligned with strikes by firefighters and other public sector workers to oppose planned 2027 budget cuts ahead of next year's presidential election.
