Destructive winds, flash floods and a storm surge are battering the Pacific coastline of Baja California Sur as the cyclone moves toward the peninsula's eastern shore. The National Hurricane Center warned that life-threatening conditions will persist through Tuesday across portions of the peninsula and the state of Sonora, with authorities anticipating severe damage to coastal towns. Residents on the northern Pacific coast spent Sunday stocking up on provisions at supermarkets in anticipation of the impact.

The storm will eventually cross the peninsula and strike the Mexican mainland for a second time. After exiting Mexico, the system will bring dangerous flash flood potential to the American Southwest through Friday, prompting preventative flood measures from residents in Long Beach, California. Previous surges from the storm had already breached coastal defenses and cut electricity to several areas of the peninsula.
