Chancellor Friedrich Merz's ruling conservative bloc and Social Democrats have combined support of 33.5% in an INSA poll, less than a potential alliance of the SPD, Greens and Left party.

The far-right Alternative for Germany's lead over Merz's CDU and its CSU sister party reached a new high in the poll, while the SPD and Greens gained ground.

The findings follow the CDU's loss of all its seats in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where it took 4.9% of the vote, below the 5% threshold, and the AfD finished first. In Berlin, the Left won 25.7% against the CDU's 18.8%. Merz called the Mecklenburg result “a disaster” but refused to resign, and secured CDU leaders' backing to remain chancellor on Sept. 21.
