The current pontiff urged the world to reconsider how artificial intelligence is developed to avoid a future where technology seizes control of the planet. During a 4 day visit to Paris, Pope Leo XIV said that AI could "ultimately destroy humanity" unless it is kept under strict human control. He cautioned that a "paradise of machines" now risks undermining the definition of human existence and poses a systemic threat to life.

The warnings were delivered at the UNESCO headquarters and the French presidential palace during the leader's first state visit to France. In addition to AI concerns, he expanded his critique to other emerging technologies and renewed Vatican opposition to nuclear deterrence, calling the military doctrine "mistaken" while citing the risks of a nuclear arms race.
