The Council of Ministers will review new emergency legislation on Tuesday to curb the escalation of street protests in Madrid. This proposed housing decree would mandate the forced extension of rental contracts through 2028 and introduce strict anti-eviction measures to prevent the removal of vulnerable tenants from their homes.

The civil unrest followed the eviction of Maricarmen Abascal, an 87 year old carried from her apartment of 71 years on a stretcher. Developer Urbagestión had raised her monthly rent from €500 to as much as €2,650, while her disability pension totaled €1,350. Tens of thousands of protesters have since marched and established camps across the capital, prompting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez to pledge rapid government intervention.
