The former head of state submitted his resignation on Sunday and intends to transition his leadership to the parliamentary branch of government. Aleksandar Vucic will run for the office of prime minister in snap elections scheduled for October 25, after resigning from the presidency to avoid a constitutional ban on seeking a third five-year term. He has served as Serbia's head of state since 2017.

The shift follows approximately 2 years of mass student-led protests triggered by a deadly railway station collapse attributed to mismanagement and corruption. Vucic intends to retain control of the country by securing a win in the upcoming parliamentary vote, as he can no longer legally compete for the presidency.
