Bill Gates Proposes Robot and Token Taxes to Avert Permanent AI Job Loss

A 6,000 word essay and series of interviews from Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates warns that the pace of artificial intelligence is far surpassing expectations and could trigger massive societal upheaval. Gates argues that unlike previous technological shifts, AI can substitute directly for human cognition, risking the permanent loss of entry and mid level roles in sales, finance, and healthcare. He calls for the creation of an international organization to monitor and regulate the technology and the establishment of "Human Reserved" categories for work that society deliberately keeps human.

The billionaire is seeking a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping this autumn to propose global limits on high risk AI models and monitoring for biological attacks. He suggests that governments rebalance the taxation of labor and capital by implementing taxes on robots and AI tokens to support workers displaced by automation. In an interview with the New York Times, Gates claimed tech executives are privately worried about AI's trajectory but publicly minimize these risks to secure the next $1 trillion in funding.
