Bill Gates Seeks Meeting With Xi Jinping to Build Global AI Controls and Backs Slowdown

Limits on high-risk AI models and global monitoring of potential biological attacks are the center of a new policy push by the Microsoft co-founder to prevent the technology from escaping human control. Bill Gates is seeking a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping to propose international safeguards, arguing that the US should lead efforts to restrict the release of dangerous models if China is to agree to similar terms.

Gates warned that there is currently no plan to manage the social and economic upheaval AI will cause and expressed a "state of shock" at the lack of urgency among world leaders. He claims tech executives privately worry about the technology but avoid public admissions to protect fundraising goals reaching $1 trillion. In a 12 page essay, Gates stated he would support a credible global plan to slow AI progress to ensure safety.
