The US government will avoid imposing heavy restrictions on the development of advanced machine learning models to prioritize national competitiveness in the technology sector. In a recent interview with TIME, Donald Trump dismissed the alarms raised by AI safety advocates as "phony threats" and stated he would not hinder the industry's growth, citing the Department of Justice and the FBI as sufficient guardrails for policing corporate misconduct.
The remarks follow a 2.5 hour dinner between Trump and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, whom he described as a "very smart guy" whose public image differs from his actual views. Trump also praised OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and advocated for a rapid expansion of American data centers to prevent China from dominating the infrastructure. He previously indicated the US could take 10% equity stakes in strategicaly important labs rather than nationalizing them, a proposal AI researcher Gary Marcus argued would compromise government oversight.
