1 OpenAI Launches Dots, Always-On Agents That Work Across 4,000+ AppsPVT:OPAIMETAAMZN 🤖 AI Sep 24, 4:38 PM EDT 220/93
OpenAI launched Dots, always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra that run on their own cloud computer, connect to more than 4,000 apps and are available today for Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise users. The product headlined a DevDay in San Francisco that brought more than 20 products. OpenAI says a dot can handle everything from booking a table to monitoring bug reports, taking on work with the initiative of a high-agency engineer or chief of staff. The agents learn from feedback, work around the clock in the background, can be called while they work and do not count against plan usage. Users start with a primary dot, with teams of them to follow. Sam Altman introduced the agents as "an AI helper that's always got your back."
OpenAI also introduced Pro 500, a $500 a month plan with 25x the usage of ChatGPT Plus and no five hour limit, which unlocks the new Ultrafast speed tier in Codex and ChatGPT Work. Ultrafast generates up to 300 tokens per second in Codex, 8x faster than standard, at 6x the price, and is available today for GPT-6 Astra in Codex, ChatGPT Work and the API, with a GPT-6.1 Sol version coming soon. OpenAI separately released GPT-6.1 Sol, which delivers near-Astra intelligence at one-fifth of Astra's token pricing. The event also brought ChatGPT Space, a shared workspace with native documents, spreadsheets and slides where teams and their Dots work from the same knowledge, Codex Cloud for running the coding agent remotely, a Decisions API built on the Luna model, and an OpenAI Marketplace that lets enterprise customers apply existing spending commitments to approved software from 32 partners including Adobe, Figma and Salesforce. Amazon is launching Bedrock Managed Agents powered by OpenAI. ChatGPT has reached 1.2 billion weekly users, and 35 million people build with ChatGPT Work and Codex every week.
The launch puts OpenAI head to head with Meta's Muse and Grok Bot, and Meta shares reacted to the announcement. Dots are limited to Pro and business plans, not the Plus, Go or free tiers, a restriction that commentators said leaves Meta an opening to take the consumer AI agent market. Dan Shipper of Every called the launches OpenAI's push to make ChatGPT "your operating system for work." Testing Dots before the event, he wrote that the software "was buggy and lacked some features I would expect, like iMessage support," but that he found himself "reaching for my Dot over starting new Codex threads." Outside the venue, protesters held signs reading "People over AI" and "Hands off our data," a first at the event in three years of coverage.
