EU Discusses Linking Diesel Reserve Release to US Promise Not to Ban Exports

EU governments discussed requiring a US commitment to avoid a unilateral diesel export ban as part of any agreement on further diesel reserve releases, a source familiar with Friday’s talks said. G7 leaders may hold a call Friday afternoon to discuss their next steps.

The discussions covered France’s proposal to release 50 million barrels of diesel from European reserves and 50 million barrels of crude oil across International Energy Agency members. Brent and US crude futures fell further on the prospect of additional supplies.

Washington has pressed France and Germany to draw down emergency diesel stocks or face a potential US export ban, Reuters reported, and requested an EU release of 120 million barrels over six months. President Donald Trump has kept a ban under consideration despite acknowledging it could raise gasoline prices.
