EU Nations Forge Unified Response to US Diesel Export Threat

The European Commission and officials from member states have finished a series of emergency calls to resolve how the bloc will manage its strategic petroleum inventories. This coordinated approach seeks to answer demands from the Trump administration for Europe to release 120 million barrels of diesel over 180 days to curb global fuel prices. Washington warned that failing to draw down these stocks could result in a total ban on U.S. diesel exports to the region, prompting crisis talks among Germany, France, Italy, Ireland, and the UK.

U.S. officials allege that Paris and Berlin have not fulfilled pledges made in March to release oil stocks to offset supply shocks from the Iran war. The push for releases coincides with U.S. diesel hitting a record $6.53 per gallon last week, five weeks before the November midterm elections. France and Germany hold roughly 35% of the EU's strategic reserves, and the requested 120 million barrel release would exceed 40% of the bloc's total emergency la l gasoline and diesel stocks.
